Swiss Post strengthens presence in Scandinavia
Swiss Post is combining forces and expanding its presence in Scandinavia: the Group division Swiss Post International (SPI) it taking over a sales agency, the Danish letter post processor SPI Denmark SpS. It is also merging the newly acquired company with SPI Sweden to become Swiss Post International Scandinavia in a bid to continue its international growth strategy.
The takeover of Copenhagen-based SPI Denmark ApS by Swiss Post International will be operationally effective from 1 July. The company was established in 2006 as an independent sales agency and provides business customers with individual solutions for cross-border shipment of daily post, advertising mail, international press titles and goods. The purchase price is to remain confidential.
SPI Denmark is being merged with SPI Sweden to form the subsidiary Swiss Post International Scandinavia. Swiss Post International Scandinavia employs 20 staff and has branches in Stockholm, Malmö and Copenhagen.
With the merger, Swiss Post International is strengthening its position in Scandinavia. The company is concentrating its competencies so as to make better use of its expertise in customer service and in its range of cross-border shipping services, thus laying the basis for future growth in neighbouring Finland and Norway. In Sweden, Swiss Post International is one of the biggest competitors of Sweden Post, with a market share of 4%. In Denmark, Swiss Post International is one of the few specialized providers of postal services for business customers with international mail.
Further growth for Swiss Post International
With this presence in Scandinavia, Swiss Post is continuing its strategy of growth in international niche markets, which is in line with the strategic aims set out for the company by the Swiss Federal Council. Swiss Post now generates 20% of its sales abroad and in the cross-border business. Swiss Post International is a wholly owned subsidiary of Swiss Post and currently employs around 1300 staff in Europe, Asia and in the USA. In the first quarter of 2009, Swiss Post International generated a profit of CHF 16 million on sales of CHF 278 million, which exceeded the previous year’s figures. In the international letter business, Swiss Post International is currently number three in the world.
